ShiVa NaCl engine preview

Postby NiCoX » 30 Dec 2011, 16:48

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you a preview of the ShiVa Native Client (NaCl) engine port I am working on during my Xmas vacancies. It's still experimental, but already covers main features (graphics, audio, keyboard and mouse inputs). The UAT target will be available in beta starting from UAT 1.4.beta1, that will be released during January.

I took a STK file made by "DogBox Studio" from this thread:
http://www.stonetrip.com/developer/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=23309&p=34047&hilit=trex#p34047

To test it, you'll need the latest version of Google Chrome, and as I did not put it on the Chrome Web Store, you'll need to enable "untrusted sources" by typing "chrome://flags" in the address bar, clicking on the button "enable" under "Native Client", then clicking on the "Restart" button. All instructions are available in this screen cast:
http://developer.stonetrip.com/Download/Chrome/Trex_NaCl.mov

Once you are ready, you just have to click on the following link to install the application:
http://developer.stonetrip.com/Download/Chrome/Trex_NaCl.crx

I only tested on Windows 7, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Tiger, all using the 32bits version of Chrome. If you encounter any problems running the demo, please post your OS version and Chrome version (specifying 32 or 64 bits).

Let me know!

What are the possibilities, does this mean tablets running android can also be targeted this way using chrome or do we still have to built for android separately?

Great new feature by ShiVa!! Keep up the great work!

Great new year all and lets make some stunning games with ShiVa in 2012!!!

kind regards,

Markus

You still need to do android builds.
At the time NaCl isn't fully finished even on the desktop. Chrome 15 introduced the base, chrome 16 fixed and expanded a few things but there are still many important things (especially for games) missing.

I wouldn't assume that NaCl will hit mobile anytime soon, not only due to the mobile chrome always lagging behind quite a bit, but also cause android users unlike iOS users simply don't update their devices on a regular base unhappily (not enough fear of viruses, YET ;))

The short term benefits are different ones: 1 build that runs on Windows, OSX and Linux and thats offered on a single store platform(Chrome Web Store) although you can offer them on your own page too.
Given that chrome is the most used single browser at the time and that it auto updates (users aren't on outdated chrome versions), this is a major benefit

Hi NicoX,
little feedback : it sounds like a great job, but after Native Client activation and App installation, my browser is staying at the loading screen. Config : win7 x64, chromium 15.0.851.0

Did you restart Chrome after setting the Native-Client flag (I missed that too ^^)?

yep, and more : my native client flag was enabled (don't remember if it was by default or not) AND I restarted Chromium after the first try.
Maybe a Chrome/Chromium difference...
